Thanks for all of this info, Lili! I am a prolific iphone photographer but don’t publish most of it. Generally sharing on social and with friends and family and printed notecards. Thinking a nice digital camera and lenses will up my game. Loving your action photos and videos. Much more interesting than close ups - which have their place, and as a designer I love studying the variety of color and pattern and genius of the complementary colors of nature which are fascinating composition-wise. But observing behavioral activity is much more engaging and amusing so keep it coming! 🤩

Lili, as always your substack is informative and interesting and your photos are so crisp and clear. I realize not all are yours but may I ask what camera and lens you use to photograph birds and wildlife? I'd love to capture birds I spot as well as you do. Thanks!

Thanks Julia. I have been using a Nikon D3300. The 3000 series is an entry level DSLR that Nikon is no longer making. At the time, it was a great deal because it came bundled with both a wide-angle and telephoto zoom for a decent price. The last model in the series is the D3500. With phone cameras getting better each year, Nikon is now focusing on the mid to higher end cameras including the new trend, mirrorless cameras. As for video, I find the iPhone works well. My iPhone 14 Pro has macro focus which is useful for closeups of insects and plants. My goal in bird photography is to document birds interacting with their surroundings. Instead of going for that perfect bird closeup, I am more focused on recording bird behavior such as eating, nesting, migrating or seeking shelter. Sometimes I am fortunate to have a cooperative bird appear close to me so that I get a good full body shot but that is more the exception than the norm for me since I don't use a super long telephoto. I have both a 200mm and a 300mm telephoto zoom that work well and are not too bulky to carry around. I hope you pursue this - it can be a very rewarding hobby. After spending decades in film photography, I find the digital world to be very gratifying as one can reasonably acquire all the tools to shoot, edit, print and publish one's photos.

So lovely, thanks for sharing! We have a few towering red cedars, and now I plan to spend some time with binoculars looking far up into their canopy to see if there are some birds that frequent them! :)
